How would you know that you were living in it? What sort of clues would you see around you if you did? Would you even notice them if they were there? Or would you frame who you are so much in relation to that totalitarian system that nothing would ever seem out of the ordinary to you? So, let’s assume for a second that Marcuse’s right, that in a country where many of the citizens see freedom as the fundamental thing the United States embodies, in reality the population’s actually living under an advanced version of monopoly capitalism that’s sort of metastasized and taken control of everything from art to politics to government, with all this amounting to what’s probably the most clever, insidious totalitarian system in history. ![]() Today’s episode is the rest on Marcuse’s work Eros and Civilization. ![]() ![]() ![]() It’s full of likable and fully fleshed-out characters, realistically depicted issues related to the aftermath of war, and it presented a fast-paced mystery surrounding human trafficking that kept me on the edge of my seat. Will Michael become her Achilles Heel? Will her reckless disregard for rules shatter the fragile bonds of their marriage once and for all? Is he still the hero she married, or has he become a liability that could get them both killed?A taste of the reviews: By the end of Reckless Endangerment I can sum it up by saying it’s Triple-H…heartbreaking, heartwarming, and heart pounding. Danger intensifies as she gets closer to the truth, but the human traffickers know her weakness. An investigative reporter, she’s hot on the trail of a human trafficking ring. ![]() But theirs is a love worth fighting for-and Hope Shane doesn’t surrender. A Marine accustomed to giving orders, Michael struggles to find his role in civilian life. ![]() Sometimes heroes fall and take the ones they love down with them. Colonel Michael Cedars and reporter Hope Shane fell in love in a warzone, but then the world blew up and splintered their lives in two. ![]() ![]() ![]() The book is thus definitely literary fantasy and makes no pretense that theme, character, and prose come above plot. Gods and mortals drift in and out of Circe’s life though she changes them (sometimes literally, into pigs) and is changed by them, their paths soon diverge again. Until that fateful meeting, the book is relatively episodic in nature. ![]() But I also can’t deny that I’m frustrated it wasn’t… more.Ĭirce is a retelling of the Greek myth of Circe, a witch and daughter of the sun god (or, more properly, titan) Helios, and best known for transforming Odysseus’ sailors into swine. It follows her from her childhood, when she first discovered her magical powers, to her lonely exile on the island where she will eventually meet said hero. I can’t deny that I thoroughly enjoyed reading it. I’m going to try my best, but if you would prefer to go into Circe with zero prior knowledge of Greek myth, this is your warning to backspace now!Īs I sit to write this review, my feelings towards Circe are complicated. Note: As the book is a relatively close retelling of ancient mythology, I’m not sure where the line is drawn between “spoilers” and “more or less common knowledge, especially if you read the ‘Circe’ Wiki article”. ![]() Judge dredd complete case files 106/7/2023 ![]() ![]() ![]() “Judge Dredd takes to the mean streets of the Big Meg once more to tackle the city’s most dangerous offenders, including the deadly martial artist Stan Lee! I don’t say that out of bitter jealousy, but because the book I read blew me away by how unspecial and uninteresting it was: treading ground superior writers have done before, and with less skill and narrative flair. ![]() The first book I am referring too was Raphael Montes weak thriller Perfect Days, and this book, My Cat Yugoslavia by Pajtim Statovci might be worse than that. It is a fact that doesn’t bother me so much as it would have when I was younger, but of the two books I have read by authors younger than I am, neither have been what I’d call great (but both are writers outside of the United States, whose works have been translated and were born in 1990). I am at that age where it is not so hard to find published books by writers who are younger than I am. ![]() The stationery shop of tehran6/7/2023 ![]() ![]() I also bought this book because of my own love for stationery shops. It’s fascinating to read about an Iran where fathers encourage their daughters to become the next Marie Curie or Helen Keller, where the young generation mingles at dance soirees and learn to tango and where a young boy is convinced he can change the world for the better. I bought this book because I was interested to learn more about a part of world history that I - I’m ashamed to admit - knew almost nothing about. But as their love blossoms, their country is torn apart by a coup d’etat: the overthrow of democratically elected Prime Minister Mohammad Mosaddegh, orchestrated by the CIA, to strengthen the rule of the Shah - a conflict that ended in violence and left hundreds of people dead. When she first locks eyes with Bahman, she is immediately drawn to his passion and youthful energy, his dreams of a better future for Iran. Roya loves nothing more than to spend her time in Mr. But their young love is put to the test as the country is swept up in political turmoil. ![]() 1953 in Iran: Teenagers Roya and Bahman meet at a stationery shop in Tehran and instantly connect over their shared love for the Persian poet Rumi. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Fast and free shipping free returns cash on delivery available on eligible purchase.
